Technical Whitepaper: Engineering Surge Protection for the Turkish Power Architecture
As Turkey accelerates its grid modernisation under the Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (TEİAŞ) and regional distribution companies like BEDAŞ, AYEDAŞ, and Toroslar EDAŞ, transient overvoltage protection has become critical. The Turkish national grid experiences severe transient phenomena caused by two major factors: rapid inductive switching transients in dense industrial corridors and direct atmospheric lightning discharges across high-altitude Anatolian plateaus. To protect expensive assets, modern electrical distribution boards must utilize multi-stage Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) with advanced Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) blocks and high-energy Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT).
Cheap surge arresters frequently fail under continuous Thermal Overvoltage (TOV) conditions, causing destructive thermal runaway and switchboard fires. Zhejiang Graybar Electric equips all export-grade SPDs with internal micro-mechanical thermal disconnectors coated with low-melting-point eutectic silver alloys. In the event of varistor end-of-life or sustained grid overvoltage, the disconnect mechanism safely isolates the MOV element within milliseconds, preventing fire hazards while triggering the red status indicator and external telemetry alarm contacts.
Severe TOV Immunity
Designed for Turkish 230/400V grid configurations with floating neutrals and unbalanced industrial three-phase loads. Rated with high Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage (Uc up to 275V, 320V, 385V, and 440V AC) to avoid premature degradation from line surges.
Low Residual Voltage (Up)
Our hybrid MOV+GDT architecture guarantees a voltage protection level (Up) below 1.2kV to 1.5kV at nominal discharge current (In). This safe threshold protects microprocessors, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensitive sensors, and high-efficiency solar inverters.
TSE & IEC Harmonization
Manufactured and verified strictly against IEC 61643-11 and EN 61643-11 standards, ensuring fast certification alignment with the Turkish Standards Institution (Türk Standardları Enstitüsü - TSE) and European CE directives (LVD & EMC).
